Map.forEach in JavaScript: build labeled inventory messages

Explore Map.forEach through this working example: build labeled inventory messages. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

A stock summary needs one readable line for notebooks, markers, and folders. The lookup already holds the labels and quantities together. Map.forEach runs a callback for each entry, letting this example collect a message per item without changing the inventory itself.

The completed messages read notebooks: 12, markers: 8, and folders: 20. Each line keeps its label with its quantity. The callback's value-first argument order is important here: quantity receives the number, and item receives the key. Reversing those roles would create lines such as 12: notebooks, which are valid strings but misleading inventory messages.

Build labeled inventory messages: source values beside the original result.

Try the result before changing the rule

Edit the JSON and select Update preview to rerun the same expression. Original data restores this starting sample; Changed data supplies another preset. The operation runs locally in the example, so trying a value does not send an invitation, change a product, or save a setting.

Build labeled inventory messages: edit the sample and check the resulting value.

Follow one run

The callback receives the stored quantity first and the item key second. It pushes a formatted line into a separate messages array. forEach itself returns undefined; the wrapper returns the collected messages. Each entry is visited in insertion order and the source inventory-pair array remains unchanged.

const data = [
  [
    "notebooks",
    12
  ],
  [
    "markers",
    8
  ],
  [
    "folders",
    20
  ]
];
const result = (() => { const messages = []; new Map(data).forEach((quantity,item) => { messages.push(item + ': ' + quantity); }); return messages; })();
console.log(result);

The starting sample returns:

[
  "notebooks: 12",
  "markers: 8",
  "folders: 20"
]

The source uses entry pairs so you can see every key and value before the lookup is constructed. The working Map is separate from that source array. Converting its entries for display does not make the Map itself a JSON array, and reading it does not submit a catalog change.

Check the case that changes the answer

Map.forEach callback arguments are value then key, unlike the key-value pair shape you may expect from entries. It also does not wait for asynchronous callbacks or collect their return values.

forEach ignores a callback return value and returns undefined itself. The visible array exists because the callback explicitly pushes messages into it. If the callback starts asynchronous work, forEach does not wait for that work to finish. Keep this synchronous example simple, or choose an explicit asynchronous control flow for requests.

The smaller version keeps the same expression with fewer visual elements. Use Edit code to inspect the complete HTML, or Copy code to run it as a local file. If the script does not execute, the JavaScript troubleshooting guide helps check placement and syntax.

Build labeled inventory messages: complete HTML starter.

Make one edit you can predict

Increase the marker quantity and add envelopes. Check the resulting messages, then swap the callback parameter names to understand why getting their order wrong creates misleading labels.

Change markers to eleven and expect markers: 11 while the other messages stay the same. Add envelopes with four and expect a fourth line. Use an empty entry list and expect no messages. Avoid adding or deleting Map entries during the callback unless you intend to account for iteration behavior while the collection changes. Keep formatting messages separate from changing stock. A callback used for a summary should not quietly modify quantities while the person reading it expects a simple report.

Build labeled inventory messages: the changed preset supplies a second input to compare with the original.
Build labeled inventory messages: the changed preset supplies a second input to compare with the original.

Keep strings double-quoted when editing this sample. A JSON parsing example explains the difference between a parse error and a valid value that the operation cannot use.

Inventory messages are easier to review with quantities and labels visible together. Set representative sample entries in the HTML and share the runnable example through NOS. A teammate can change one quantity and check its line without assuming the callback updated any stored stock. Their preview edits are local to their run; sharing the HTML does not automatically synchronize those edits.

Questions people ask

What does Map.forEach do in this example?

The callback receives the stored quantity first and the item key second. It pushes a formatted line into a separate messages array. forEach itself returns undefined; the wrapper returns the collected messages. Each entry is visited in insertion order and the source price-pair array remains unchanged.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Map.forEach?

Map.forEach callback arguments are value then key, unlike the key-value pair shape you may expect from entries. It also does not wait for asynchronous callbacks or collect their return values.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
