Map.values in JavaScript: read the capacities stored in a room map

Explore Map.values through this working example: read the capacities stored in a room map. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

You already have a room-capacity lookup, but a chart needs only the capacity numbers. Map.values lets you extract those stored values without repeating the room names. The example makes the resulting sequence visible so you can check which labels were left behind.

The visible sequence is twelve, twenty-four, and eight. These are capacities only; the source pairs explain which rooms they came from. This extraction can feed a numeric calculation, but it cannot label that calculation's individual rows on its own. The moment your chart needs room names, retain entries rather than discarding the keys too early.

Read the capacities stored in a room map: source values beside the original result.

Try the result before changing the rule

Edit the JSON and select Update preview to rerun the same expression. Original data restores this starting sample; Changed data supplies another preset. The operation runs locally in the example, so trying a value does not send an invitation, change a product, or save a setting.

Read the capacities stored in a room map: edit the sample and check the resulting value.

Follow one run

The Map receives the room-capacity pairs and values returns an iterator over the stored numbers. Array.from collects those numbers in insertion order. The result is twelve, twenty-four, and eight; it has no room names. This read leaves the working Map and source input unchanged.

const data = [
  [
    "Studio",
    12
  ],
  [
    "Workshop",
    24
  ],
  [
    "Lounge",
    8
  ]
];
const result = Array.from(new Map(data).values());
console.log(result);

The starting sample returns:

[
  12,
  24,
  8
]

The source uses entry pairs so you can see every key and value before the lookup is constructed. The working Map is separate from that source array. Converting its entries for display does not make the Map itself a JSON array, and reading it does not submit a catalog change.

Read the capacities stored in a room map: inspect the smaller example and compare its source with its result.

Check the case that changes the answer

Removing keys also removes their context from the result. Use entries instead if your chart or table must keep each capacity tied to the correct room label.

Two rooms with equal capacities produce two equal numbers in the result. values does not deduplicate stored values because uniqueness belongs to Map keys. An empty room Map produces an empty sequence. Like other Map iterators, values can be consumed directly, while Array.from makes a separate array for convenient display or array methods.

The smaller version keeps the same expression with fewer visual elements. Use Edit code to inspect the complete HTML, or Copy code to run it as a local file. If the script does not execute, the JavaScript troubleshooting guide helps check placement and syntax.

Read the capacities stored in a room map: complete HTML starter.

Make one edit you can predict

Change Workshop to forty and rerun. Then give two rooms the same capacity and confirm values keeps both numbers rather than deduplicating them.

Set Workshop to forty and expect twelve, forty, eight. Set Lounge to twelve and expect twelve to appear twice. This confirms that the chart data retains one value per stored room key. If you want an overall capacity next, sum these numbers with an initial zero rather than using Map.size. Summing the returned capacities is a separate operation with a separate question. A numeric total does not describe whether the rooms are available at the same time.

Read the capacities stored in a room map: the changed preset supplies a second input to compare with the original.
Read the capacities stored in a room map: the changed preset supplies a second input to compare with the original.

Keep strings double-quoted when editing this sample. A JSON parsing example explains the difference between a parse error and a valid value that the operation cannot use.

Before using capacities in a chart, check whether the chart also needs room labels. Share the runnable HTML through NOS with representative room pairs so a teammate can see what values retains, what it leaves out, and why equal capacities still produce separate entries. Their preview edits are local to their run; sharing the HTML does not automatically synchronize those edits.

Questions people ask

What does Map.values do in this example?

The Map receives the room-capacity pairs and values returns an iterator over the stored numbers. Array.from collects those numbers in insertion order. The result is twelve, twenty-four, and eight; it has no room names. This read leaves the working Map and source input unchanged.

What is the main mistake to avoid with Map.values?

Removing keys also removes their context from the result. Use entries instead if your chart or table must keep each capacity tied to the correct room label.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
