A cart explicitly sets discount to zero. The fallback rule should keep that choice, not replace it with a default discount of five. A truthiness-based fallback would accidentally change the intended amount.
The nullish coalescing operator uses its fallback only for null or undefined. The example returns 0 from data.discount ?? 5. This small distinction matters whenever zero, false, or an empty string can be a real supplied value.

Preserve zero while defaulting missing values
The expression checks data.discount first. If that value is null or undefined, it evaluates and returns 5. Otherwise, it returns the supplied value, including the zero in the original sample.
Removing discount from this plain object makes that property read undefined, so the result becomes 5. Setting discount to null also gives 5. Setting it to zero keeps 0. These cases define the fallback contract more precisely than saying the operator handles an empty value.
The operator does not change the cart. It returns the effective value for the next part of your calculation or display, while the original object remains available for inspection.
const data = {
"discount": 0
};
const result = data.discount ?? 5;
console.log(result);
The original sample returns:
0

Fallback selection is not amount validation
Logical OR has a different condition. data.discount || 5 would return 5 for zero because zero is falsy. It would also replace false and an empty string. Choose the operator based on the data contract, not on which symbol looks shorter.
Nullish coalescing is not validation. A negative amount, a string, or an object is preserved if it is not null or undefined. Check that the resulting discount has an acceptable type and range before using it.
Directly mixing ?? with || or && requires parentheses. Make the intended grouping explicit, and keep a complicated fallback chain readable rather than hiding multiple rules in one dense expression.
Compare nullish and truthy fallback rules
Compare {"discount": 0}, {"discount": null}, and {}. Predict 0, 5, and 5 before updating the preview. Then try an empty string and see that it is preserved; decide whether your discount form should permit that value.
In a copied starter, show the ?? result next to the || result for each input. Add validation after selecting the effective value so the interface distinguishes a missing amount from an amount that was supplied but is invalid.

The MDN reference for Nullish coalescing operator (??) documents the method's full behavior and browser compatibility.
For help editing the sample input, the JSON guide explains valid JSON and how parsing turns it into JavaScript values.
Share a working explanation
This fallback rule is easier to review when someone can try the explicit-zero and missing cases. Share the complete HTML using HTML to link through NOS. Keep sample carts fictional, and describe the page as a browser-side logic demonstration rather than a checkout that applies discounts to live orders.
