String.charCodeAt in JavaScript: inspect the first utf-16 unit of a label

Explore String.charCodeAt through this working example: inspect the first utf-16 unit of a label. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

A label starts with A followed by a smiling emoji. Before turning characters into numeric identifiers, you need to know what charCodeAt actually reads. This example starts with a familiar letter so you can compare its code unit with the emoji's two-unit representation.

The finished number is sixty-five, the code unit for A. This familiar result makes the Unicode distinction easier to see before trying an emoji. The string contains A followed by a smile, but charCodeAt reads exactly one indexed UTF-16 unit. It does not count visual symbols, decode a file encoding, or inspect the whole label at once.

Try the result before changing the rule

Edit the JSON and select Update preview to rerun the same expression. Original data restores this starting sample; Changed data supplies another preset. The operation runs locally in the example, so trying a value does not send an invitation, change a product, or save a setting.

Inspect the first UTF-16 unit of a label: edit the sample and check the resulting value.

Follow one run

charCodeAt reads the UTF-16 code unit at index zero and returns sixty-five for A. The same operation at the emoji's first position returns a surrogate unit rather than its full Unicode code point. Reading a unit does not alter the string or normalize its contents.

const data = "A😀";
const result = data.charCodeAt(0);
console.log(result);

The starting sample returns:

65

The source panel retains the original value while the operation returns its result. Numbers shown here represent exactly what this function reads or constructs; they are not automatically a character count or a byte encoding. Keeping the raw value visible makes that distinction easier to check with a second sample.

Check the case that changes the answer

charCodeAt returns one UTF-16 code unit, not necessarily a complete character. Out-of-range positions return NaN, and emoji or combined characters can require more than one unit.

Put the smile first and charCodeAt at zero returns the leading surrogate value 55357. Its following unit has another value, 56832. Those two units jointly represent the smile. Reading a position beyond the string returns NaN, which is a missing-unit signal rather than the numeric code for an invisible character.

The smaller version keeps the same expression with fewer visual elements. Use Edit code to inspect the complete HTML, or Copy code to run it as a local file. If the script does not execute, the JavaScript troubleshooting guide helps check placement and syntax.

Inspect the first UTF-16 unit of a label: complete HTML starter.

Make one edit you can predict

Replace the label with an emoji at the start and compare charCodeAt(0) with codePointAt(0). Explain why their numeric results differ for that same visible symbol.

Start with B and expect sixty-six. Start with the smile and expect 55357 from charCodeAt, while codePointAt at zero returns 128512. Finally use an empty string and inspect NaN. These comparisons show why a function that works for ordinary Latin letters can still be the wrong tool for a Unicode symbol identifier. Name the result a code unit in a debugging interface. Calling it a character code without qualification can hide the surrogate-pair behavior that this example is meant to reveal.

Inspect the first UTF-16 unit of a label: the changed preset supplies a second input to compare with the original.
Inspect the first UTF-16 unit of a label: the changed preset supplies a second input to compare with the original.

Keep strings double-quoted when editing this sample. A JSON parsing example explains the difference between a parse error and a valid value that the operation cannot use.

For a Unicode debugging discussion, include a basic letter and an emoji in the sample HTML and share it through NOS. Another developer can compare their first code units directly, which makes the surrogate distinction easier to verify than calling both results a character code. Their preview edits are local to their run; sharing the HTML does not automatically synchronize those edits.

Questions people ask

What does String.charCodeAt do in this example?

charCodeAt reads the UTF-16 code unit at index zero and returns sixty-five for A. The same operation at the emoji's first position returns a surrogate unit rather than its full Unicode code point. Reading a unit does not alter the string or normalize its contents.

What is the main mistake to avoid with String.charCodeAt?

charCodeAt returns one UTF-16 code unit, not necessarily a complete character. Out-of-range positions return NaN, and emoji or combined characters can require more than one unit.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
