A support subject includes Invoice at the start and invoice later with different capitalization. You need the position of the exact lowercase match before slicing or highlighting text. String.indexOf makes the case-sensitive lookup visible rather than treating every similar-looking word as equivalent.
The lowercase invoice begins at index eighteen in the starting subject. The capitalized Invoice at the beginning is ignored because the search is case-sensitive. That difference matters when highlighting a support subject: a numeric position identifies the exact text found, but it does not mean a search engine's broader case-insensitive matching rules were applied.

Try the result before changing the rule
Edit the JSON and select Update preview to rerun the same expression. Original data restores this starting sample; Changed data supplies another preset. The operation runs locally in the example, so trying a value does not send an invitation, change a product, or save a setting.

Follow one run
The method scans the string from the beginning for the exact substring invoice. The capitalized opening word does not match, so the result points to the lowercase occurrence later in the subject. A missing substring returns minus one. Positions are measured in UTF-16 code units.
const data = "Invoice reminder: invoice 1042 is due";
const result = data.indexOf('invoice');
console.log(result);
The starting sample returns:
18
The source panel retains the original value while the operation returns its result. Numbers shown here represent exactly what this function reads or constructs; they are not automatically a character count or a byte encoding. Keeping the raw value visible makes that distinction easier to check with a second sample.

Check the case that changes the answer
An index of zero is a valid match and minus one means missing. Avoid testing the returned number for truthiness; compare it with minus one explicitly instead.
The optional second argument sets the starting position for the forward search. It does not change the string or make the comparison case-insensitive. For a deliberately case-insensitive search, normalize the subject and query consistently, and remember that mapping positions back to complex Unicode text may require more care than simple ASCII.
The smaller version keeps the same expression with fewer visual elements. Use Edit code to inspect the complete HTML, or Copy code to run it as a local file. If the script does not execute, the JavaScript troubleshooting guide helps check placement and syntax.

Make one edit you can predict
Make the opening word lowercase and observe the result become zero. Then remove both occurrences and confirm that missing text produces minus one rather than false.
Change the opening word to invoice and expect zero. Remove all lowercase occurrences and expect minus one, even if Invoice remains capitalized. Try an empty subject and a nonempty query to get minus one. Before slicing or highlighting, check that a match exists rather than letting a missing position drive the operation. When showing a highlight, preserve the original subject alongside the returned position. That gives you a concrete substring to verify before constructing any highlighted display.

Keep strings double-quoted when editing this sample. A JSON parsing example explains the difference between a parse error and a valid value that the operation cannot use.
A subject-line highlight needs an exact position and a sensible missing-match state. Put representative sample text into the HTML and share the runnable example through NOS, so a teammate can compare an opening match, a later match, and a subject containing no lowercase invoice. Their preview edits are local to their run; sharing the HTML does not automatically synchronize those edits.
