String.fromCodePoint in JavaScript: build a status symbol from unicode numbers

Explore String.fromCodePoint through this working example: build a status symbol from unicode numbers. Change the input and inspect the result before using your own data.

A status label is stored as Unicode code points: a smiling face, a space, and OK. You want to turn those numbers into readable text without manually assembling surrogate pairs. fromCodePoint builds the label and makes its difference from fromCharCode easy to inspect.

The finished label is a smile followed by a space and OK. Four supplied code points produce a string containing five UTF-16 units because the smile needs a surrogate pair. That does not mean the label has five visible characters. Keeping input points, string units, and visual symbols distinct helps avoid misleading length calculations later.

Try the result before changing the rule

Edit the JSON and select Update preview to rerun the same expression. Original data restores this starting sample; Changed data supplies another preset. The operation runs locally in the example, so trying a value does not send an invitation, change a product, or save a setting.

Build a status symbol from Unicode numbers: edit the sample and check the resulting value.

Follow one run

The spread expression passes each code point as an argument. String.fromCodePoint converts the smile to its required surrogate pair and appends the space, O, and K. The result is a new string. Supplementary characters can make its UTF-16 length greater than the number of supplied code points.

const data = [
  128512,
  32,
  79,
  75
];
const result = String.fromCodePoint(...data);
console.log(result);

The starting sample returns:

"😀 OK"

The source panel retains the original value while the operation returns its result. Numbers shown here represent exactly what this function reads or constructs; they are not automatically a character count or a byte encoding. Keeping the raw value visible makes that distinction easier to check with a second sample.

Check the case that changes the answer

fromCodePoint throws RangeError for invalid integers or values outside zero through 0x10FFFF. Validate imported numbers and avoid assuming output string length equals the number of visible characters.

The accepted numeric range includes supplementary code points, but fractional values, negative values, and values above the Unicode maximum throw. The inspector shows the error rather than inventing a replacement character. A valid numeric range alone is not a complete content policy; an application may still reject control characters or unwanted symbols.

The smaller version keeps the same expression with fewer visual elements. Use Edit code to inspect the complete HTML, or Copy code to run it as a local file. If the script does not execute, the JavaScript troubleshooting guide helps check placement and syntax.

Build a status symbol from Unicode numbers: complete HTML starter.

Make one edit you can predict

Try a basic letter, a supplementary emoji, and an out-of-range number. Check valid output first, then make sure the example reports invalid input instead of silently changing it.

Replace the input with sixty-five and expect A. Restore the smile and remove the remaining numbers to get that symbol alone. Try minus one or 1114112 and expect RangeError. Validate imported values before conversion when a batch should fail with a useful explanation instead of aborting halfway through building a label. Retain the original numbers when debugging imported labels. Comparing them with the generated text makes an invalid range or unintended control value easier to identify.

Build a status symbol from Unicode numbers: the changed preset supplies a second input to compare with the original.

Keep strings double-quoted when editing this sample. A JSON parsing example explains the difference between a parse error and a valid value that the operation cannot use.

A numeric label import is worth checking with both valid and invalid examples. Put representative code points into the HTML and share the runnable example through NOS, so a teammate can verify the symbol and the RangeError case before deciding how the import should report bad values. Their preview edits are local to their run; sharing the HTML does not automatically synchronize those edits.

Questions people ask

What does String.fromCodePoint do in this example?

The spread expression passes each code point as an argument. String.fromCodePoint converts the smile to its required surrogate pair and appends the space, O, and K. The result is a new string. Supplementary characters can make its UTF-16 length greater than the number of supplied code points.

What is the main mistake to avoid with String.fromCodePoint?

fromCodePoint throws RangeError for invalid integers or values outside zero through 0x10FFFF. Validate imported numbers and avoid assuming output string length equals the number of visible characters.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
