String.match in JavaScript: invoice digits extraction

Build invoice digits extraction with String.match. Compare the actual result with its source, then try the same operation with your own data.

An invoice note says Invoice INV-104 is ready. You want the digits 104 for a compact reference label, without keeping the surrounding words. String.match() can find that text with a regular expression.

The example displays 104 as a string. It also handles a note with no digits, so extracting a reference does not crash when the expected text is missing.

Try the working result

Use Changed data to compare a second sample, or edit the JSON and press Update preview. Original data restores the starting example. This is a running browser demonstration, so the visible result comes from the operation rather than a fixed screenshot.

Try String.match with editable sample data and a visible result.

Follow the operation

The regular expression /\d+/ matches a run of one or more digits. Without the global flag, data.match returns details for the first match, including the matched text at index zero.

Optional chaining reads that first item only if the match exists. The nullish fallback then supplies No number when match returns null. The displayed result is the selected text, not the full match-details array.

If the note contains INV-104 and room 203, this expression still returns 104 because it asks for the first run of digits. It does not know which number represents an invoice.

Here is the exact expression behind the original result:

const data = "Invoice INV-104 is ready";
const result = data.match(/\d+/)?.[0] ?? 'No number';
console.log(result);

Its returned value is:

"104"
The starter shows the String.match operation beside its returned value and source.

A complete HTML starter for String.match; compare its result with the finished version.

Handle the important boundary

A failed match returns null, so directly reading data.match(/\d+/)[0] can throw. Handle the no-match case before accessing its array entries.

Adding the g flag changes the shape of match's result: you receive all full matches rather than the same first-match details. If you need every occurrence with capture groups, matchAll offers a different interface. Choose the operation based on whether your task needs one match, many full matches, or detailed captures.

Make the behavior your own

Try a note with no number, then one containing two different digit sequences. Confirm both the fallback message and the first-match rule in the result panel.

In the copied starter, compare /\d+/ with /\d+/g and inspect the entire returned value instead of selecting index zero. Next, make the input contain a date before the invoice number. That reveals whether finding the first digits is precise enough or whether you need a pattern tied to the INV- prefix.

A second invoice digits extraction sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.
A second invoice digits extraction sample demonstrates how the result responds to changed input.

For the full definition and compatibility details, see the MDN reference for String.match. If the copied file's script does not run, the HTML and JavaScript guide covers the surrounding setup.

Share a version worth testing

A reference extractor deserves tests with missing and competing numbers, not only the happy path. Share the complete HTML through HTML to link so someone can supply those examples. Use fictional invoice text; this lesson extracts strings locally and does not look up or validate real invoices.

Questions people ask

What does String.match do in this example?

Non-global match returns match details; index zero holds the matched digits, 104.

What is the main mistake to avoid with String.match?

A failed match returns null. Handle it before reading the result.

Can I run the example without installing anything?

Yes. Copy the complete HTML demo, save it as index.html, and open it in a browser. It uses only sample data and built-in JavaScript.
